With several fun nicknames to her credit, including “Kit Kat” and “Mia”, Maria Robshaw is all about enjoying her life as the Bangor Region YMCA ’s Membership and Registration Manager. Her favorite quote says it all: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
In addition to supervising Welcome Center staff and membership operations, Maria works closely with each Y department as the Program Registrar. She also helps CEO Diane Dickerson with Y financial assistance applications from the community. No wonder Maria cites “variety” as one of the reasons she loves working at the Y. “My job allows me to interact with all walks of life and meet interesting people,” she says.
Maria has spent well over a decade at the Bangor Region YMCA and says, among other things, it has taught her to be more patient. She loves the people she interacts with every day, from Y members to co-workers. Her favorite Y core value is Honesty. “No matter what, being honest with both yourself and others is always best,” she believes. “Dishonesty does nothing but hurt you and others in the end.”
Growing up in Bucksport, Maine, Maria is the youngest child and has 15 half-siblings. Prior to the Y, she spent six years with the U.S. Postal Service. She cites her parents as the people who have influenced her the most. “Both are hardworking, caring people,” she says.
Outside of the Y, Maria enjoys baking and eating all the delicious food her husband makes. She participates in Y fitness classes and likes going on random road trips throughout the year, discovering new places and being outdoors. She also enjoys sleeping which is no wonder when you consider her very full-time role at the Y!
