India Stubbs-Hammond Member Engagement Coordinator

“You can’t expect you, out of other people” – I stand by this quote to stay consistently kind and patient, as everyone is going through different waves of life and sometimes it becomes easier to judge how someone is treating you, rather than attempting to see their sides and struggles.

I love working at the Bangor Y because of everything it stands for. I have a big sense of community along with a love for customer service and building rapport with members and all of the amazing individuals who work here making the magic as well. I chose the Y because it allows me more opportunities with my family while allowing to build my children’s childhood experiences with camps, classes, swimming, daycare, etc.

My job as membership services is being the first face you see coming into the Y and being friendly, warm, welcoming, and helpful. Here in this position, I am able to direct members to where they need to go, who they need to talk to, along with being a plethora of knowledge while obtaining the ability to build rapport and really learn about our members and show them how much the Y cares. I came from a general management position directly prior to this endeavor while also having done a few years as Planet Fitness membership services as well, so the mixture between customer service and memberships really hit the mark for me here.

I was born right here in Bangor, Maine, grew up going to camps and was actually a Barracuda myself around 2002/2004. My family moved to Florida in 2006, and I lived there up until 2024 when I moved my own family here for better opportunities for my children for education and overall happiness, since the move we have absolutely loved every second of it. Before the Y I was a manager of a Dunkin’ Donuts and prior to that I had been a barista at Starbucks for a few years along with past customer service jobs.

All types of humans have impacted me. Over my years of random life experiences I have met so many influential people but being a special needs parent has really shaped who I am when it comes to compassion, understanding, and patience. My kids are my biggest supporters along with my reasons for consistently working towards being a good role model and overall good human being.

The Y’s core value of Caring has resonated with me the most because I care with my entire core. I am very understanding along with consistently working to be a welcoming person who can resonate with all types of situations and understanding regardless of how I live my life, we are all humans just making it day by day and I thrive to make interactions with me something that makes people smile.

When I’m not working, I love to workout, spend time with my family and honestly just make the most of the days.

Finally, a little fun fact about me is my name is India after Indiana Jones, and my middle name is Athena like the Greek goddess of war. My mom thought she was really cool in the 90s.
