ABOUT THE PROGRAM

In the Spring, our Y and St Joseph Healthcare ran a pilot program for this class, thanks to Miki MacDonald, with St Joseph Healthcare, who earned a grant to cover the expenses.

The grant consists of two parts, both seeking to aid people on their road to recovery from substance use disorder (SUD).  One part involves providing sober housing, and another part – ours – involves running a yoga program, lead by a yoga instructor, who is in long-term recovery herself and whose journey was aided by her positive experiences with yoga.

Engaging in exercise can empower individuals striving for sober living, by enabling them to improve physical fitness and enhance their psychological well-being, including their sense of self-efficacy. Certainly, engagement in group exercise and engagement with a community like the Y can also enhance psychological sense of community.  We hope to play a role in all of this… in getting people through the doors, in enhancing health, in growing confidence, and in expanding sense of community.  All of these things can reduce anxiety, depression, isolation, and risk of relapse.

The program is for those identifying with being in recovery.  It is free to all participants. Those who want to attend Recovery Yoga will receive a 5-punch day pass. With this day pass, participants can go to the Monday yoga class and after class concludes, may even enjoy the rest of the facilities our Y has to offer. This punch pass is only redeemable on Recovery Yoga Mondays.
